President's Message: A Debut Greeting from New President Melissa Travis

I am honored to take the helm as President of the Rhode Island Society of CPAs; it is a privilege to lead such a prestigious organization.


I am deeply grateful to my predecessor, Bob Mancini, for his leadership and contributions to the Society. I had the pleasure of working with Bob over several years and admired the respect he garnered from the business community; I have no doubt he will achieve the same level of success in his new position.

2019 is shaping up to be an exciting and transformative year for our industry, both locally and nationally. The theme of the AICPA regional conference held recently in New York was “get comfortable with being uncomfortable”, highlighting the challenges and market disruptors the CPA industry is facing. To meet these challenges, RISCPA will be launching a series of initiatives to strengthen the Society and provide greater value to our members, or as Board Chair Dave Lucier refers to it: “RISPCA 2.0”. These initiatives will include new programs, innovative solutions and industry collaborations, which will make a RISCPA membership more relevant than ever.

I hope you will join us at our annual RI Society of CPAs Annual Meeting and Recognition Reception, Tuesday, April 23rd at the Providence Marriott. Distinguished former Board Chair Ernie Almonte will serve as the event’s keynote speaker. The evening will include new features and surprises as we welcome newly certified CPAs, elect new leadership for the Society, and celebrate this year’s scholarship and award recipients. We will also recognize departing board members, including immediate Past Chair Barbara Perino and members Michael Kraten and Jennifer Freitas. We owe each of these individuals a debt of gratitude. I am pleased to announce RISCPA’s very popular Emerging Leaders Network will launch again in May for its third year and promises to be one our most successful yet. The six-month program provides business owners and employees access to business leaders to develop invaluable business relationships and leadership skills while earning up to 28 hours of CPE professional development credit! The ELN opportunity is open to CPAs, attorneys and financial industry executives eager to reach the next level of their career.
