GOVERNOR RAIMONDO UPDATES MARCH 24:

STATE REVENUES AND MAINTAINING STATE OPERATIONS:

IN LIGHT OF THE CRISIS AND THE CHANGE IN TAX FILING DEADLINES, GOVERNOR RAIMONDO ASKED THE LEADERSHIP AT THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO CONVENE THE EMERGENCY DISASTER FUNDING BOARD. SHE REQUESTED THEY TAKE IMMEDIATE AND EMERGENCY ACTION TO GO INTO THE PRIVATE MARKET AND SECURE A LINE OF CREDIT. THE EXTRAORDINARY MEASURES ARE PRUDENT TO LINE UP LIQUIDITY AND PAY BILLS. THE EMERGENCY DISASTER FUNDING BOARD CONSISTS OF THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE, THE SENATE PRESIDENT AND THE CHAIR OF HOUSE AND SENATE FINANCE COMMITTEES.

UNEMPLOYMENT UPDATE:

GOVERNOR RAIMONDO ANNOUNCED (AS EXPECTED) UNEMPLOYMENT FILINGS HAVE EXCEEDED PREVIOUS DISASTER FILINGS AND SHE RECOGNIZES THE CHALLENGES THIS CRISIS HAS CREATED FOR EVERYONE. GOVERNOR RAIMONDO ENCOURAGES ANYONE WHO IS UNEMPLOYED TO FILE

(SHE ALSO REMINDED EVERYONE SHE HAS WAIVED THE WAITING PERIOD FOR CLAIMS); THE TEAM AT THE RI DEPARTMENT OF LABOR IS WORKING AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE TO PROCESS CLAIMS. THE GOVERNOR URGES PEOPLE TO REFRAIN FROM CALLING THE AGENCY TO CHECK ON THE STATUS OF CLAIMS BECAUSE THE SYSTEM IS OVERWHELMED. IF THERE IS AN URGENT NEED, PLEASE EMAIL THE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR WITH INSTEAD OF CALLING. THE GOVERNOR ALSO THANKED SCOTT JENSEN AND EVERYONE AT THE AGENCY FOR THEIR EXTRAORDINARY EFFORTS DURING THIS CRISIS.

CHILDCARE AND ELDER CARE UPDATE:

GOVERNOR RAIMONDO ANNOUNCED RHODE ISLAND WILL PARTNER WITH CARE.COM ON A FIRST IN THE US PARTNERSHIP TO HELP THOSE WHO NEED TO WORK DURING THIS CRISIS. CARE.COM IS OFFERING A PREMIUM SERVICE AT NO COST FOR RHODE ISLANDERS FOR 90 DAYS TO ASSIST WITH CHILD OR ELDER CARE NEEDS. CARE.COM ALSO HAS A LINK FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING THEIR TIME WITH CHILD OR ELDER CARE SERVICES FOR THOSE IN NEED.

IN ADDITION, SEVERAL CHILD CARE FACILITIES INCLUDING BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS, GREATER PROVIDENCE YMCA, CHILDREN’S WORKSHOP, CHILDREN’S FRIEND AND LEARNING BROOK WILL OFFER ON SITE CHILDCARE FOR ESSENTIAL HOSPITAL WORKERS. RHODE ISLAND DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES WILL NOTIFY EACH HOSPITAL WITH ELIGIBILTY CRITERIA AND INFORMATION. THIS ACTION IS FOR ESSENTIAL HOSPITAL PERSONNEL ONLY!

GOVERNOR RAIMONDO ALSO ANNOUNCED THE FOLLOWING: ALL DAYCARE, CHILDCARE AND ELDER CENTERS CAN CHOOSE TO CONTINUE OPERATIONS, BUT WILL NEED TO COMPLY WITH NEW EMERGENCY REGULATIONS ESTABLISHED BY THE RHODE ISLAND DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES, WHO WILL LEAD THE EFFORT. THE NEW GUIDELINES WERE CREATED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE RHODE ISLAND DEPARTMENT HEALTH AND CDC; ALL CENTERS MUST FOLLOW THESE NEW GUIDELINES TO REMAIN OPEN.

EDUCATION REMOTE LEARNING UPDATE:

GOVERNOR RAIMONDO ANNOUNCED THE LAUNCH YESTERDAY WAS SUCCESSFUL AND THANKED EVERYONE WHO IS WORKING TO HELP WITH THE EFFORT.

REMINDER ON PREVIOUSLY DISCUSSED ISSUES:

TRAVEL – INTERNATIONAL AND DOMESTIC:

GOVERNOR ANNOUNCED NEW RESTRICTIONS ON DOMESTIC TRAVEL:

PREVIOUSLY ANYONE RETURNING FROM INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL WAS ASKED TO SELF QUARENTINE FOR 14 DAYS. THE GOVERNOR ANNOUNCED NEW DOMESTIC TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS THAT WILL BEGIN AT 7 AM TUESDAY MARCH 24:

    • ANYONE RETURNING TO RI BY PLANE MUST SELF-QUARENTINE FOR 14 DAYS
    • NATIONAL GUARD TEAMS WILL BE LOCATED AT TF GREEN AIRPORT TO COLLECT CONTACT INFORMATION FOR TRACKING (ORDER WILL NOT APPLY TO HEALTHCARE OR PUBLIC HEALTH WORKERS AND PUBLIC SAFETY PROFESSIONALS-THESE CATEGORIES ARE EXEMPT)

GOVERNOR RAIMONDO ISSUED GUIDANCE TO COMMUTERS TRAVELING OUTSIDE RI FOR WORK:

  • GOVERNOR IS URGING RHODE ISLAND BUSINESSES TO MAKE EVERY PROVISION POSSIBLE FOR EMPLOYEES TO WORK FROM HOME.
  • SMALL BUSINESSES IN NEED OF LAPTOPS OR REMOTE SOFTWARE ARE ASKED TO CALL (401) 521-HELP FOR ASSISTANCE
  • DO NOT LET ANYONE COME TO WORK SICK – ALL EMPLOYEES SHOULD BE SCREENED BEFORE ENTERING THE FACILITY.

GOVERNOR RAIMONDO STATED THAT BASED ON GOVERNOR BAKER’S EXECUTIVE ORDER, IT IS NOT NECESSARY FOR HER TO TAKE ADDITIONAL MEASURES TO CLOSE THE BORDERS OR EXPAND SHUT DOWN ORDERS. SHE URGED BUSINESSES AND INDIVIDUALS TO CONTINUE TO COMPLY WITH PREVIOUS REQUESTS.

GOVERNOR RAMAINDO SAID HER ADMINISTRATION IS “WORKING AROUND THE CLOCK TO ENSURE RHODE ISLAND HAS ACCESS TO CRITICAL PPE SUPPLIES AND TOLD RHODE ISLANDERS THEY SHOULD NOT BE WORRIED AT THIS TIME”

ELECTIONS AND PRIMARY:

GOVERNOR RAIMONDO HAS SIGNED AN EXECUTIVE ORDER MONDAY MOVING RHODE ISLAND’S PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY FROM APRIL 28 TO JUNE 2ND, AS REQUESTED BY THE BOARD OF ELECTIONS. RHODE ISLAND VOTING WILL FOLLOW OTHER STATES ANNOUNCING VOTING WILL PRIMARILY BE BY MAIL BALLOT

THE GOVERNOR WILL CONTINUE TO HOST PRESS CONFERENCE DAILY BRIEFING AT 1 PM EACH DAY
