RIYAN Committee Hosts 4th Annual RISCPA Olympics & Collection Drive for Child & Family of RI

The 4th Annual RISCPA Olympics event and collection drive put on by the RI Young Accountants Network (RIYAN) Committee in early November was a huge success as over $4,500 in goods and supplies for families and households were collected, and over $2,000 in direct donations were raised for the Child & Family of RI organization. Child & Family, which fills a vital need in Newport County as the area's largest social service needs provider, also works statewide with numerous community organizations to provide a range of support services to needy families. Volunteers for the RIYAN Committee dedicated approximately 44 hours of service over the weekend of November 5-6 to collect donations for the effort, and a fun evening of "Olympics" was staged on November 2 where a golf putting green, basketball, and bean bag toss were among the contests staged. RIYAN Committee Chairman Josh Bloom, an audit supervisor at BlumShapiro, commended all those who were part of the effort.

"We applaud the 114 volunteers consisting of 14 different teams, representing CPAs, attorneys and students, as well as our own Committee members who came together to support this important social service organization," Josh says. "The contribution of time, energies, and collection efforts by all volunteers is greatly appreciated, and the fun and camaraderie of our Olympics makes for a great time also. These efforts have helped put Child & Family in a better position to serve Rhode Island."

Goods and supplies valued at $4,435 were collected, including: 303 separate boxes of art supplies worth approximately $1,515; 42 backpacks worth approximately $840;approximately $540 in gift cards to Walmart and Target; various hygiene products worth $425; throw blankets worth $320; diaper boxes and baby formula supplies worth approximately $230; play items such as 16 basketballs and footballs worth approximately $160; and other miscellaneous supplies worth approximately $405. An additional $2,000 in direct donations were also collected for the effort.

Josh extends his thanks to the following: RIYAN Committee volunteers involved in planning and Days of Service, including: David Fontes, Mark McKiernan, Jessica Ratcliffe, Ross Replogle and Dan Shults.
